Job Description
Innovation & Strategy

  • Develop and execute the strategic roadmap for packaging, aligning with overall business goals related to market growth, sustainability (e.g., circular economy, reduced plastic), and cost efficiency.
  • Lead the entire New Product Development (NPD) process for packaging, from ideation and concept generation to lab-scale prototyping and industrial trials.
  • Conduct technological and competitive benchmarking to identify emerging materials, processes, and design trends that can provide a competitive advantage.

Technical Development & Execution

  • Manage projects focused on packaging material qualification and selection, including flexible films, rigid plastics (e.g., PET, PP), paperboard, and barrier materials, ensuring optimal food preservation and shelf-life.
  • Oversee design for manufacturing (DFM), ensuring packaging designs are compatible with existing production equipment and optimize filling/packaging line efficiency.
  • Direct the team in developing and issuing comprehensive technical specifications (e.g., drawings, material composition, Bill of Materials - BOM) for all packaging components.
  • Lead testing and validation protocols (e.g., drop tests, seal integrity, transportation trials) to confirm performance, durability, and compliance.

Compliance, Quality & Cost Management

  • Ensure all developed packaging materials and formats strictly adhere to global and local food contact regulations (e.g., FDA, EU regulations) and food safety standards (e.g., BRCGS, FSSC
  • Collaborate with Procurement to evaluate and qualify new suppliers and alternative materials based on quality, technical performance, and cost targets.
  • Drive projects for Cost Reduction and Value Engineering (VAVE) to optimize material usage, reduce waste, and improve overall cost-in-use without compromising quality.

The Successful Applicant

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Packaging Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, or a closely related technical field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in R&D or Packaging Development, with at least 3 years in a management/leadership role within the food or FMCG packaging sector.
  • Deep technical knowledge of various packaging technologies (e.g., lamination, extrusion, printing, filling systems) and their application in food preservation.
  • Proven expertise in managing complex technical projects using methodologies like Phase-Gate or Stage-Gate.
  • Strong understanding of food safety regulations and standards pertaining to food contact materials.
  • Certifications in Project Management (PMP) or Continuous Improvement (e.g., Six Sigma).
  • Experience with sustainable packaging life-cycle assessments (LCA) and circular economy principles.
  • Proficiency in packaging design and drafting software (e.g., ArtiosCAD, SolidWorks).
