Director of Vietnamese Studies

Our client are seeking a Director of Vietnamese Studies to drive an industry leading,
engaging and educationally sound Vietnamese education program with multiple
stakeholders and beneficiaries that brings national praise to their School in Hanoi
and that ensures all students with an interest and commitment to studying
Vietnamese are supported in the best possible way. The position will report to the
Director of Teaching and Learning, and will be an integral part of the School’s Senior
Leadership Team working closely with many other department heads of the School.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Create an environment that facilitates an effective shared vision; serving as a

thought leader and ambassador for the school in the field of Vietnamese
studies
- Lead academic, research and engagement activities in the context of a broad

vision of the discipline of Vietnamese studies on behalf of the school
- Foster a culture of high-impact interdisciplinary collaboration within the

school; building partnerships and alliances across the school community
including with parents;
- Advance the school’s academic excellence relative to peer institutions
- Develop external partnerships, when relevant, in support of the school’s

mission and goals; aligning and allocating resources with school strategic
plans and vision
- Provide department faculty with instructional, pedagogical, and curricular

mentorship and supervision in Vietnamese language
- Devise new and developmentally appropriate approaches to integrating

Vietnamese language studies into the IB curriculum for all age groups
- Lead whole-school efforts to utilize data to inform course design, pedagogy,

and decision-making
- Design and execute internal assessments that can be used to improve

student learning
- Lead whole school efforts utilize data (internal and external) to drive curricular

and pedagogical improvements in the teaching of Vietnamese language
- Regularly observe faculty members and provide clear feedback on pedagogy
- Liaise with faculty, school counselors, and administration regarding student

health, care, and discipline, particularly when these issues impact teaching
and learning
- Liaise with outside groups and organizations regarding programs and

opportunities related to Vietnamese language courses
- Provide support to admissions in reviewing the Vietnamese language

capabilities of potential students
- Provide all faculty with clear and specific instructional strategies that will help

them support the learning of Vietnamese
- Maintain Vietnamese language department budget
- Drive proactive communications with parents and/or guardians of students of

Vietnamese language ensuring holistic support for all students

employment based on their Vietnamese language abilities

- Direct the purchasing of supplies, textbooks, and materials for the

Vietnamese studies department
- Perform other duties as required by the Head of School

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Master’s degree or above in Vietnamese Language or Literature
- 10+years of academic experience leading departments in the field of

research or Vietnamese teaching
- Familiarity with international academia is an advantage
- Current and wide-ranging knowledge of Vietnamese literature, methods, and

developments in the field of second language and literature learning
- Peer-respected in the field of Vietnamese studies
- Strong oracy skills and high comfort levels with making presentations before

large groups of people
- Ability to build, manage and motivate cross-functional, high-performing

teams
