ORGANISATIONAL BACKGROUND


TRAFFIC is the leading non-governmental organization working globally on trade in wild animals and plants in the context of both biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

TRAFFIC International is a charity and limited company registered in the UK. TRAFFIC's head office, based in Cambridge UK, provides worldwide leadership, coordination, cross-regional and corporate functions.

TRAFFIC's local engagement is managed through programme offices operating under the auspices of the UK charity, with staff based in a hub office and at other strategic locations where necessary.

Programme offices operate within a geographic area of responsibility focused on one or multiple countries where TRAFFIC aims to help deliver priority programme outcomes.

TRAFFIC works in strategic alliance with IUCN and WWF on wildlife trade issues.- CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

  • The Data and Research Officer will be responsible for activities related to the physical and online market, including conceptualizing, designing, developing methodology, analysing data, reporting, and followup actions as well as collection and input of information in an accurate and consistent manner into WiTIS. This position will work closely with Programme Officers and Project Officers of related projects and will report to Senior Programme Officers/ Office Director.


 SPECIFIC DUTIES
  • Design, plan and carry out physical and online market surveys to acquire information about illegal wildlife trade;
  • Develop plans/protocols, budgets, and questions for surveys;
  • Collect and report survey data in an organised manner;
  • Regularly report on the progress of surveys to Senior Programme Officers and Office Director;
  • Prepare Back to Office reports following fieldwork and surveys;
  • Collaborate closely with Programme Officers and Project Officers of related projects and activities;
  • Undertake analysis of survey data;
  • Draft and contribute to technical reports of survey data;
  • Undertake other tasks relevant to surveys;
  • Collect and compile information regarding traderelated enforcement actions, including arrests and convictions in Viet Nam and entered onto iBase;
  • Prepare monthly illegal wildlife trade reports and highlights in Viet Nam;
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor;
  • REQUIREMENTS
  • Native Vietnamese speaker with fluency in verbal and written English;
  • Familiarity with and an interest in conducting surveys;
  • Ability to identify wildlife from parts and products;
  • Ability to analyse large data sets;
  • Experience with the collection and collation of data and developing survey methodologies;
  • An eye for detail and a keen interest and ability to recognize and uncover connections between data are a must;
  • Problem solver with critical thinking skills;
  • Wellorganized with time management skills;
  • Adept at Excel;
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a diverse team as well as independently, with respect for and sensitivity to multicultural approaches
  • Independent thinker that shows initiative in developing innovative approaches
  • Passionate about biodiversity conservation and sustainability.
