IUCN Viet Nam (Executing Agency) is responsible for implementing the Fostering Water and Environmental Security in the Ma and Neun-Ca Transboundary River Basins and Related Coastal Areas, Viet Nam and Lao PDR project. The project started early 2024 and will be implemented in 5 years, with diverse activities in Lao PDR and Viet Nam. GEF is the donor and FAO is the Implementing Agency and the national government partners are the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) in Viet Nam and MONRE in Lao PDR.
The main objective of the Ca/Ma project is to enable Viet Nam and the Lao PDR to address freshwater resource management and ecosystem health in the transboundary Neun-Ca/Ma river basins and coastal zones by creating an enabling environment for transboundary cooperation and action. The PMU project office is in Hanoi.
Within the framework of the project, GIS capability and assistance are needed, the Ca/Ma project is offering an opportunity for GIS & Remote Sensing Intern
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
The intern will learn and practice performing specific tasks in close collaboration with the supervisors to prepare simple maps in GIS formats and perform simple analytical functions with spatial data and SRS (Satellite Remote Sensing) data by the ESRI ArcGIS software or open-source software, including QGIS. These map preparations and simple GIS analysis will be executed within the project in close cooperation with long-term project staff (PMU, IUCN) and several external consultants (short-term) involved in the project. The intern will work in the field or office to fulfil their responsibilities as needed or requested.
The following specific tasks are envisaged under the support and guidance of Supervisors include the following:
- Configuration and customization of GIS/remote sensing free-of-charge software such as the QGIS suite or ArcGIS Pro on the assigned laptop.
- Collection and standardization of existing topographic maps or database(s) of the working area and creation of GIS essential layers at the requested scales (elevation, rivers, dams, towns and villages, roads, administrative boundaries, irrigation networks, surface water areas, forest, and protected areas etc.
- Develop the base map concepts for Ca/Ma projects, create the map templates and specific thematic base maps as required.
- To collect, edit, and standardize GIS and SRS data from various sources, including free-of-charge satellite imagery from Sentinel-2, Sentinel-1, Landsat 7, 8, and 9, DEM data, and other data related to the environment, water resources, climate change, forestry, agriculture, social-economic, land management, hydrology system, water uses, etc. in the working areas.
- Coordinate with the project team, conduct field surveys using data collection tools, and identify land cover and land use types.
- Land cover and land use (LULC) mapping, using visual photo interpretation on-screen and production of digital land cover maps.
- Assisting in preparing maps and infographics for project presentations and reports.
- Perform other tasks as directed by the supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS
- Vietnamese national who is currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor’s or Master degree in areas of Geography, Geomatics, GIS, Hydrology, Forestry, Environmental Science,Urban Planning or other relevant field;
- Basic understanding of GEE, Python, and R for assessment and analysis of the GIS data and SRS data is preferred;
- Knowledge of remote sensing and GPS data collection methods;
- Ability to prepare maps to professional standards;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
- Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines;
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies;
- Strong verbal and written communication both in English and Vietnamese;
- Good computer skills in MS office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams);
- Able to travel to project site if required by the project team (in Vietnam).
